| The river is flowing low at 49 CFS. Terrestrials, small caddis, and midges are your best bet for rising fish. Fish longer leader rigs when fishing dry flies. Nymphing will be your best bet in the mornings and as the day progresses work to emergers and the dries. Streamers will move some larger fish but its tough to find deep enough water to work them. Work pocket water and deeper runs with Flash Fly clousers, Woolly Buggers, Zonkers and such. Don't go below 3x tippet when fishing streamers. If you register on the forum and email your username and address to us, we will send you a free flash fly clouser. This fly has caught 75% of the trophy trout on our website.

| The Gunpowder offers a variety of water running through parts of Gunpowder State Falls Park. It is one of Maryland's premiere trout streams, with the most popular section being the area that runs between Prettyboy Reservoir and Loch Raven Reservoir. Trout sizes range from 10" to 20". The average sized fish is around 12". The population of trout is primarily browns (97%), with also rainbows. The rainbows are mainly found in the section of water just above Falls Road. |
| The stretch of approximately five miles from Prettyboy Dam to Bluemount Road (MD 138) is catch and release, flyfishing only. |
